Former Chelsea flop emerges as favourite to replace Lampard as manager

Andriy Shevchenko clear favourite to replace Frank Lampard as Chelsea manager

According to the Metro, former Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko has emerged as the odds-on favourite to replace Frank Lampard as the manager.

Lampard’s job has come under serious threat following the Blues’ disappointing 2-0 defeat to rivals Leicester City on Tuesday night. The loss meant we have now faced a defeat in five of our last eight league matches, winning only two of those.

The pressure has been mounting on Lampard for quite some time now. However, the wins against Morecambe (FA Cup) and Fulham had eased it somewhat. But, Tuesday’s loss to the Foxes, and the manner of it, has once again ramped up talks of Lampard getting sacked.

Now, it is being claimed that former Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko is tipped as the favourite to replace the club legend in the dugout.

Shevchenko had a forgettable stint during his playing career at Chelsea. The Ukrainian signed for Chelsea in 2006, for a then-record fee of £30.8m. However, having failed to settle in as expected, the striker departed to Dynamo Kyiv, having scored 22 goals in 77 games. (h/t Metro)

The 44-year-old entered into management in 2016, taking over the reins of the Ukrainian national team. He has managed 41 games for them so far, with a record of W21 D9 L11.

Also in contention for the job are former AC Milan and Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri, who has been without a club since 2019. In addition, Thomas Tuchel, who was sacked by PSG last month, is also a contender.

Andriy Shevchenko to be the next Chelsea manager?

Shevchenko may be the favourite as per the odds. But, it has been claimed that Chelsea are inclined towards naming a German-speaking coach as the new manager.

It remains to be seen how the situation unfolds in the coming days. But, a move for someone unproven at club-level management, like Shevchenko, could end up backfiring.
