According to The Athletic, Chelsea legend, Petr Cech is set to don the club’s jersey to take part in a competitive game on Monday.
His return to the Blues goal will be against Tottenham Hotspur in their Premier League 2 fixture. It will be his first competitive game in 19 months.
Cech’s last game was against us for Arsenal in the 2019 Europa league final.
He would back at the Bridge just days later as the club’s technical and performance director. It was a homecoming of sorts for a player who spent 11 years in goal for us.
It would be fair to say not many would have expected him to be in goal for after his return. However, the Blues made the surprise decision to add Cech to their Premier League squad this season amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
While he is not expected to play for the senior side, it now appears as if he is set to play for our development squad.
Cech’s inclusion is due to the club’s decision to rest Lucas Bergstrom, the development team’s regular goalkeeper. The youngster for the Under-18 side on Saturday and Chelsea do not want the Finn playing two games in the space of 48 hours.
Karlo Ziger is another option. But according to the report, Frank Lampard is keen to keep him in the first-team.
Despite hanging up his gloves, Cech continues to train with the Chelsea keepers. While he may not be the dynamic keeper he once was, his experience and know-how would add much to the young Chelsea side.
A four-time Golden Glove winner, Cech has made 494 appearances for the Chelsea senior side. If he does feature against Tottenham, it will not be even close to the biggest game in his career. (h/t Transfermarkt)
However, as he has shown us over the years, he can be counted upon to step up when needed.
