Chelsea star breaks Ronaldo’s record after a prolific night in Spain

Chelsea star Olivier Giroud breaks Cristiano Ronaldo’s record in Sevilla masterclass

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud proved that old is gold in the impressive 4-0 win away to Sevilla yesterday night.

The French international grabbed all four goals in an excellent display where he rolled back the years. It was an excellent example of the importance the veteran has in the Chelsea squad.

The win ensured top spot, leaving manager Frank Lampard with little to play for on the last matchday.

According to The Express, Giroud’s goals also broke an impressive record held by Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Frenchman’s tally on the night saw him take the moniker of the oldest player to score a hat-trick in Europe’s top competition.

Incidentally, Giroud achieved the landmark by netting a perfect hat-trick. Once that was done, he went on to add another one late on from a penalty.

The 34-year-old’s future at the club has been the matter of much discussion in recent weeks. With regular playing time is a requisite heading into next summer’s Euros, he was backed to look for a move away in January.

His performance on the night was a telling reminder of what he can do on a given day. The fact that Lampard has a player of this calibre to call on showcases the strength in depth of the Chelsea squad.

The Blues boss did confirm that Giroud may start on the bench in the upcoming clash against Leeds. Despite his performance, it seems like he is still behind Timo Werner in the pecking order.
