Speaking on the Gary Neville Podcast (h/t The Express), Premier League legend Gary Neville believes Chelsea have the edge over Tottenham Hotspur in the title race, thanks to Thiago Silva and N’Golo Kante.
As things stand, Spurs are top of the league on goal difference ahead of defending champions, Liverpool. Frank Lampard’s new-look Chelsea side are just two points behind them and well within reach.
“Chelsea are impressing me, they have a real chance.”
With the title race looking to be a tightly contested competition unlike in recent seasons, things could go down to the wire.
Frank Lampard’s Blues are the in-form team in the country and are unbeaten in their last 13 games. They possess a squad that is well stocked and has quality in abundance.
Despite Chelsea being behind Tottenham, Neville believes that the Blues have the edge over Jose Mourinho’s side.
This is due to Kante and Silva. Both players are serial winners who have won a plethora of trophies. Their experience and know-how will be a major asset come crunch time.
“I think Chelsea have more of a chance [than Tottenham for the title]. They have Kante, they have Thiago Silva, players that could navigate them to it.”
Neville believes Roman Abramovich has instilled a winning culture at the club that is now synonymous with our identity. The same cannot be said for Tottenham, whose triumphs are rarer than sightings of the Lochness Monster.
The title challenge is unchartered territory for the North Londoners. It remains to be seen how they respond once the pressure gets to them.
Meanwhile, Kante too shares Neville’s optimism regarding Chelsea. The Frenchman believes Chelsea have an excellent squad and are in a good position to achieve something.
The Blues have grown in strength as the season progresses. With each passing game, we look more formidable as a team.
