According to The Guardian, Frank Lampard has admitted that Chelsea are under no pressure to sell Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Much was expected of the Spaniard when the Blues broke the bank to bring him to the Bridge in 2018. Despite a decent debut season, he has continued to regress.
With Edouard Mendy now firmly entrenched as the club’s starting shot-stopper, Kepa finds himself at a crossroads in his career.
Lampard, however, has gone on to reveal that he is under no pressure from the club’s board after dropping the world’s most expensive keeper to the bench.
“The pressure is to win games and I have to do the right thing to win games, and Mendy has made himself a permanent fixture at this point.”
Mendy’s signing coupled with that of Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell have seen the Blues defence emerge into a position of strength this season. There is simply no reason for Lampard to drop Mendy if performance is the yardstick to go by.
With the top spot in our Champions League group guaranteed, Lampard can afford to give Kepa a run-out against Krasnodar today night.
The Blues confirmed the same in his pre-match presser. Not only will it get Mendy a well-earned rest but also give Kepa a chance to shine.
“This is a game for Kepa who is training brilliantly well. I have no qualms about putting him in.”
It was reported earlier this year that Kepa is ready to move on loan and also lower his £150,000-a-week wages to try to revive his fortunes.
Given how close we are to the January transfer window, tonight’s match can be considered an audition for interested parties.
