Chelsea planning to reward Kurt Zouma with a new contract
Speaking on the Here We Go podcast, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano (h/t football.london) reports that Chelsea will soon begin discussions with Kurt Zouma regarding a new contract.
Kurt Zouma has been one of the star performers this season for Frank Lampard’s side. The 26-year-old has been a mainstay at the heart of the Chelsea defence.
He has formed a formidable partnership at the back with summer signing Thiago Silva, which has seen Chelsea have one of the best defensive records in the league so far.
And now, the Blues want to reward the Frenchman with a new contract, with the discussions set to begin around the new year.
Zouma has a few years left on his current contract. The former Saint-Etienne defender is tied down until 2023 at Stamford Bridge. (h/t football.london)
However, Chelsea want to avoid the situation where one of their most important players enters into the final two years of his contract at the club.
Zouma’s importance to the Chelsea squad this season can be highlighted by the impressive numbers for both the player and the team this season.
Chelsea have conceded just 11 goals in 12 league matches with Zouma in the team. Zouma has also scored 4 goals this season, making him Chelsea’s second-highest goal-scorer. (h/t Transfermarkt)

It is definitely good news for the Blues fans as Zouma is arguably in the physical prime of his career. He is just 26 years old, which means that a new contract will ensure that he spends his peak years at the Bridge.
In addition to that, his good performances could also invite interest from other clubs. In such a situation, it seems best to avoid any potential headaches by having the player tied-down to a long-term contract.
