“That’s not ideal” – National team boss argues against his own claim regarding Chelsea star

Didier Deschamps wary of Chelsea overplaying Olivier Giroud

It was only last month that France national team boss, Didier Deschamps revealed that Chelsea star Olivier Giroud will have to play regularly to stay ahead of Anthony Martial in Les Bleus’ pecking order.

According to The Daily Mail, he now believes it is not healthy for the player to play three games in a week. He has however admitted to being happy with the player’s return to form.

Giroud scored four goals against Sevilla midweek before adding to that in the win over Leeds United at the weekend. Whether he starts tonight’s game against Krasnodar remains to be seen.

“If Lampard decides to have him play three days a week, that’s not ideal either.”

Deschamps for his part has a high opinion of Giroud, who he rates as one of the best at the international level. He is hopeful that the veteran striker can continue his rich vein of form.

“I’m happy for him and I’m hoping it can last.”

It is the second time in two years that Giroud has risen to the challenge set by Deschamps. The 34-year-old played a key role in the second half of the 2019/20 campaign after Tammy Abraham was sidelined with an injury.

The underappreciated hero

The French national team boss also went on to add that Giroud is an underrated player. We could not agree more.

“He is often criticised. A lot of the things said about him are unfair and he has this strength of character.”

Giroud has for large parts of his career been treated unfairly. Despite that, he continues to score goals and step up when needed.

In fact, the players’ performances speak for themselves. Having a player of Giroud’s calibre to call upon is a real testament to our squad’s strength in depth.

Giroud trails Thierry Henry’s France goal tally by seven

Overtaking the Arsenal legend’s tally will be a befitting reply to his detractors.
