Talking to TalkSport (h/t Express), former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino pointed towards Yussuf Poulsen as the man who would get the best out of misfiring Chelsea striker Timo Werner.
Chelsea brought in a host of new players in the summer. Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell, and Kai Havertz all had a bright start to the season.
Chelsea were propelled to the top of the Premier League table after a 14-game unbeaten run. However, things are looking alright now at Stamford Bridge.
Frank Lampard’s men have won just one out of their last 5 league games as they were held to a draw against Aston Villa this week. Timo Werner, in particular, has looked off the pace in this bleak stint for the club.
The German striker has not scored in his last 11 games for Chelsea. While Lampard has shuffled him around to find his best position, Cascarino believes the solution lies elsewhere. (h/t Express)
Likening Timo Werner to Michael Owen of Liverpool, the former Blues forward says he needs someone who can hold the ball for him, much like Emile Heskey used to do for Owen at Anfield.
To this end, Cascarino points to Yussuf Poulsen of RB Leipzig, a striker with whom Werner spent four seasons in Bundesliga, as the man to make Werner ‘thrive‘.
“…when he was at Leipzig he played alongside Poulsen who is a big centre-forward. And he played off the left of him and thrived.”
The former Republic of Ireland striker also believes Werner is not capable of playing up front on his own.
“He is blisteringly quick, his touch is not exceptional, he’s technically not bad but not great… he can’t play centre-forward on his own.”
While the advice does make sense, Olivier Giroud is not too different from Yussuf Poulsen, especially when it comes to holding the ball up. So Chelsea might already have the solution to the problem posed by Cascarino.
