As confirmed by the club’s official site, Chelsea have won two awards at the 2020 Sports Business Awards.
Both have come thanks to our hosting of Soccer Aid 2019 at Stamford Bridge. It was the first time that the annual charity match for raising money for UNICEF was held at Stamford Bridge.
The matchup featured a mixture of celebrities and football legends. It was also the first Soccer Aid matchup that included female players.
Some of the stars on show that day included ex-Chelsea Women captain Katie Chapman. Former Blues such as Didier Drogba, John Terry, Michael Essien, Joe Cole, Ricardo Carvalho and Glen Johnson also took part.
Chelsea’s events, operations, and marketing teams took the top Gold award in the Best Operations Team category and the Bronze for Best Non-Matchday Use of Venue. It exemplifies the effort that goes into organizing events without being in the spotlight.
The club beat off competition from the likes of Cheltenham Racecourse, the Solheim Cup and the World Darts Championship. The judges reserved special praise for the excellent organisation of the event and the promotion of UNICEF’s good cause.
The 2019 event was described as the most successful Soccer Aid after raising more than £7.5m for the international children’s charity.
This despite the lower attendance capacity at Stamford Bridge compared to previous venues such as Old Trafford and Wembley Stadium. It was also the most-viewed fundraising event ever broadcast on ITV.
