Lampard gives his verdict on the closely-fought Premier League title race

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard expects the Premier League title to be decided by a lower point tally than in recent seasons

According to The Independent, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard expects the Premier League title to be wrapped up for a lower point tally than seen in recent years.

The English top-flight has seen the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City set incredible numbers on the board in recent seasons. While both teams ran away with the title in the last two seasons, this year could not be any different.

The top eight sides are seperated by a mere five points and a weekend’s worth of results could see teams fortunes change in a jiffy.

While there is still a long way to go before the season is completed, the table is starting to take shape. This weekend saw all the top teams bar Leicester City drop points once again exhibiting the dynamic nature of the title race.

“The league is getting tighter for whatever reason. I think teams are strengthening.”

Chelsea is not prone to dropping points themselves. In fact, we were beaten by Everton last weekend, denting our chances of going top. Lampard insists the Blues are still a work in progress and will need to ensure they keep up the necessary levels to stay in the race.

Chelsea have dropped points against Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur

“We have to make sure we just maintain our levels and keep improving to stay in that.”

With a flurry of matches to negotiate in December, Chelsea can not afford to drop any more points. It could see us lose ground in our efforts to keep up with the top.

The last four seasons have seen the Premier League champions chalk up 90 plus points. Given the way this season has gone, 80+ points seems a reasonable enough number to guarantee the title.

The lowest point tally for a Premier League winning side was achieved by Manchester United in 1996/97 where they managed just 75 points.
