French legend backs PL side to lose key 21-year-old star amidst Chelsea links

West Ham United not expected to hold on to Chelsea target Declan Rice

According to The Express, Patrice Evra believes West Ham United are resigned to losing Chelsea target Declan Rice.

He reckons it is a matter of when and not if the English international will call it quits with the Hammers. Still just 21, Rice has emerged as a key player for David Moyes’ side.

The Blues were linked with a move for the player last summer but were unable to reach an agreement. Rice’s performances since will have done little to stem that interest.

Chelsea remain interested in Declan Rice

According to the report, Chelsea are expected to renew their efforts to sign the player in January. Signing would see the player return to the club from where he was released at the age of 14.

“They know they are going to lose him.”

Rice is also a close friend of Chelsea star Mason Mount. The duo starred for England against Iceland and also got on the score sheet in what was a memorable performance.

The prospect of renewing that partnership is an enticing prospect for the Blues. Moreover, Rice is also a leader who has been entrusted with sharing captaincy responsibilities with Mark Noble at West Ham.

Declan Rice and Mason Mount were together at Chelsea during the academy days

Evra went on to add that despite his increased role at the club, Rice has kept his head grounded and gone about his work with minimal fuss.

It was reported earlier that West Ham are indeed worried that Chelsea could make another swoop for Rice in January. They have entered contract negotiations with the midfielder, hoping to convince him to stay with financial incentives.

Where that leads could give us an indication about the player’s intentions for the future.

Rice is developing into an excellent player

Rice is an excellent player with high potential. However, at West Ham, there is only so much he can achieve.

Chelsea can give him the stage to go onto a high level while also have a realistic shot at winning trophies.
