Ligue 1 duo keen on under-used Chelsea star whose contract is running down

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud courting interest from Ligue 1

According to Telefoot (h/t Football.london), Ligue 1 duo Marseille and Bordeaux have entered the race for Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud.

The veteran striker is the third-choice frontman at the club. Behind the likes of Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham, Giroud’s chances this season are going to be limited unless circumstances change.

Despite being 34, the French ace remains a potent threat. He continues to be linked with a number of clubs including Italian giants Inter Milan.

The player was warned by national team boss Didier Deschamps that he needs to be playing regularly to have a chance of making the French squad for the Euros.

Giroud is open to the idea of a January move to save his international career. He once again put up a show for his suitors by scoring twice in France’s 4-2 win over Sweden yesterday night.

It would appear that there is no shortage of interest in the player, should Chelsea accept his desire to leave. According to The Athletic (h/t Football.london), four Premier League clubs are also keeping tabs on his situation.

Timo Werner is the club’s top striker

Given his advanced age, next summer’s Euros might as well turn out to be his last major international tournament.

Given the role he has played for us over the last few years, it would only be fair that we permit him the move if it increases his chances.

Giroud is an excellent third-choice striker to have and is a powerhouse in the air. However, with his contract running down, it depends on whether the Blues are ready to lose him for free or get what they can in January.

The 34-year-old veteran has played just six times for Frank Lampard’s side in 2020/21. Of these, only two of those appearances have come in the Premier League.

An often underrated player, Giroud ahs continued to prove his detractors with his on-field performances.
