“Low maintenance” – Lampard aims a sly dig at under-fire Chelsea star

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard throws shade at Kepa Arrizabalaga with Edouard Mendy comment

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard replaced under-fire goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga with Edouard Mendy earlier this season.

The Senegalese international has since cemented himself as one of the best keepers in the league. He has shown good leadership at the back and has kept a plethora of clean sheets so far.

This is in stark contrast to Kepa, who has struggled with his inability to keep clean sheets.

According to Daily Star, Lampard was full of praise for the new Chelsea No.1. In fact, the club had done their homework before securing Mendy and knew exactly what they were getting.

“When we were in to sign him all the feedback was that he had a strong personality in the dressing room.”

The 28-year-old has also impressed the Chelsea boss in training. A player with an impressive work ethic, it is difficult for any self-respecting manager to dislike what Mendy brings to the table.

“What I have seen in a short period of time with Edouard is a player that has a massive work ethic to train and push himself every day.”

A sly dig?

In what would appear to be a dig at Kepa, Lampard described Mendy as ‘low maintenance’.

“He is very low maintenance. He wants to engage and he works hard. He is a positive in the dressing room.”

The Senegalese cost a fraction of what Kepa did. The Spaniard is still the most expensive keeper in world football. Despite that, he has not shown himself to be a dependable option.

Mendy on the other hand has been worth the price. He has calmed down the rearguard and continues to be a solid last line of defence.

Mendy has kept an impressive five clean sheets in his first six games for the club. To put it into perspective, it is half of what Kepa has managed in his last 44 games for the club.

The Senegalese has proven to be well worth the price that Chelsea paid for his services.
