A View From The Bridge

Out-of-favour Chelsea star ready to take pay cut to end Stamford Bridge nightmare

Chelsea star Kepa Arrizabalaga ready to take a pay cut to end Stamford Bridge stay

According to The Sun, Kepa Arrizabalaga is ready to take a pay cut and end his nightmare stay at Chelsea.

Much was expected of the Spaniard when the Blues broke the bank to bring him to the Bridge in 2018. Despite a decent debut season, he has regressed.

A number of errors last season saw him get relegated to the bench in favour of Willy Caballero. Although he did retain his spot in the starting XI, it did not last long. Frank Lampard once again brought Caballero back into the line-up towards the end of the season.

Kepa Arrizabalaga could leave Chelsea on loan in January

Kepa’s errors against Brighton and Liverpool this season saw his stock fall even lower. Since then, Edouard Mendy has come in and has made the starting spot his.

The Senegalese international has put to rest the ghosts of Chelsea’s goalkeeping mistakes and rejuvenated the defence.

Kepa’s horrors have seen him drop down the pecking order even at the international level. He is now behind David de Gea and Unai Simon for Luis Enrique’s Spain side.

Edouard Mendy has been spectacular for Chelsea

Chasing a dream

With him in the wilderness for both club and country, the player is currently at the crossroads of his career.

With both teams flourishing in his absence, the player is convinced that his future now lies away from Chelsea. He is ready to move on loan and also lower his £150,000-a-week wages to try to revive his fortunes.

Kepa has also fallen down the pecking order for Spain

Kepa acknowledges he must be playing first-team football to stand any hope of making Spain’s Euro 2020 squad. He dreams of playing in Spain’s group game against Slovakia at the home of former club Athletic Bilbao in June.

Kepa was assured in the summer that he still had a future at the club. While it may still be the case, he will have to improve dramatically to lay any claim for a starting spot.

Moreover, Mendy looks assured and is in no mood to relinquish his spot in the line-up. A move away from Chelsea might be the best solution for all parties involved.
