Chelsea midfield ace on the road to first-team football after recovering from injury

Thomas Tuchel advised Billy Gilmour to join Graham Potter's Brighton in the summer.

Billy Gilmour edges closer to a first-team return

According to a report by Football.london, Billy Gilmour is inching closer to a first-team return as he fully recovers from a serious knee injury suffered in July this year.

After suffering a serious knee issue in Chelsea’s win against Crystal Palace, Gilmour hasn’t seen any first-team action with Chelsea, although he has played with U-21 teams.

Gilmour has featured for Chelsea’s U-21 team and also gained important match-time during the international break when he featured for Scotland’s U-21 side against Croatia, even though he got sent off after coming on at half-time. (h/t football.london)

The Chelsea youngster missed the international fixture against the Greece U-21 national team but played for an hour in Chelsea U-21’s EFL Trophy game against Bristol Rovers.

Gilmour is in contention to be in Lampard’s matchday squad against Tottenham Hotspur although there has been no indication if he will be picked. (h/t football.london)

Gilmour has 11 senior appearances for Chelsea and featured in 6 Premier League matches last season. The young midfielder burst onto the scene last year and has been labeled as one of the most exciting prospects in the Chelsea team.

The 19-year-old midfielder sent Lampard a reminder of his abilities when he scored a brilliant goal for Chelsea’s development side as they came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 in the Premier League 2 fixture at the Academy Stadium.

Chelsea host title contenders and rivals Tottenham Hotspur this Sunday in a 04:30 PM GMT kick-off at Stamford Bridge. Given the intense competition for places in midfield, Gilmour could have to wait for a little more time before he sees any first-team action again.
