According to the club’s official site, Chelsea have confirmed that they are working on plans to welcome back fans into Stamford Bridge next month.
Fans were last permitted into the stadium in our home game against Everton last season. 40,694 fans were in attendance on March 8th as we dismantled the Toffees 4-0.
The wait could be about to end just short of nine months on December 5th three days after the national lockdown ends. Our visitors on the day will be Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United.
The Elland Road outfit have enjoyed a fine start to life in the top-flight. They continue to impress and look set to stave off relegation come the end of the season.
Given the history between Lampard and Bielsa, it could be a feisty affair. Depending on London’s classification, we may have as many as 4000 fans cheering us on that day.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed that supporters will be allowed back in stadiums for regions that fall into Tier 1 or Tier 2. (h/t Leeds Live)
Areas in Tier 1 will be permitted a maximum of 4000 fans while those in Tier 2 will be allowed 2000. Areas in Tier 3 will however be restricted from hosting any fans whatsoever. (h/t Leeds Live)
The government is set to inform areas which tier they will fall into on Thursday. As long as London avoids a Tier 3 classification, fans will make their return to our imposing home arena.
Chelsea for their part welcome the move and have urged their supporters to be patient.
While the classification of Tier 1 will see us bring back 4000 fans, it is a far cry from the packed houses we are used to at the Bridge. It is however a start and we can eventually return to sold-out stadiums in the future.
