A View From The Bridge

Former Chelsea ace backs under-fire Blues star to come back strong

Asmir Begovic backs Chelsea ace Kepa Arrizabalaga to get back to his best

Speaking to talkSport (h/t Football.london), former Chelsea goalkeeper Asmir Begovic has backed Kepa Arrizabalaga to return to his best.

The Spaniard is the world’s most expensive keeper. Chelsea broke the bank to sign him from Athletic Bilbao in 2018.

Despite the numerous opportunities and faith put in him, he has failed to live up to expectation. A slew of individual errors has seen him fall out of favour with manager Frank Lampard.

Despite starting the season as the No.1, Kepa’s errors against Brighton and Liverpool have seemingly sealed his fate.

The Blues brought in Edouard Mendy, who has since proven himself to be a dependable last line of defence. With the Senegalese star continuing to impress, Kepa is now nowhere in the picture.

One man who is not writing him off just yet is Begovic. He believes Kepa will come back stronger after the international break and stake a claim for his starting spot.

“I think Kepa can prove everybody wrong? Possibly. I think Kepa is a really good goalkeeper, he played really well in Spain before his move to Chelsea and it’s obviously been a tricky time for him.”

Edouard Mendy has been spectacular for Chelsea

Curiously, Begovic appeared to hint that the player could impress elsewhere.

“He’s got really good quality and I’m sure he’ll be a huge success, whether at Chelsea or somewhere else.”

If Mendy continues to impress as he currently is, Kepa will have to be patient for an opportunity. Once that appears, it is up to him to ensure he makes an impression.

Chelsea today are much better defensively. The new signings have all contributed immensely to that.

It remains to be seen if Kepa will stick around at Chelsea. It can however not be said that he was not given opportunities to impress.
