According to the Express, Chelsea legend Ashley Cole has praised Ben Chilwell for the start he has made at the club.
The 23-year-old joined the Blues from Leicester City this summer. Although he took a while to recover from injury, he has since gone on to establish himself as the club’s first-choice left-back.
As some who occupied the same role at the club for a long time, Cole is well aware of what one needs in order to succeed at Chelsea.
“Defensively, middle third he can deal with, and of course attacking wise he’s got a different range of passing. He can shoot. He can combine.”
Cole was a player who would have fit the modern game well. Adept in both attacking and defending, the former Blues man was a monster down the flank.
Chilwell is in the same mould and contributes effectively at both ends of the pitch. Cole believes Chilwell has added balance to the Blues squad and made it a better outfit as a whole.
“I think Chelsea look defensively better with him. They’ve got that better balance.”
His success should come as no surprise given how committed Chilwell was at getting it right. Cole revealed that the player sought his advice after making the move to Stamford Bridge.
He was advised to keep working hard and to play to win. It is fair to say that he has followed the advice to a tee.
“I said ‘listen just keep working hard, want to play for the club, want to win.”
Chilwell limped off against Belgium while on England duty yesterday. Hopefully, it is not serious and he will return to action soon.
