All things said Edouard Mendy did not make his Chelsea debut in the best of circumstances.
The Senegalese started in place of Willy Caballero, who took Kepa Arrizabalaga’s place last weekend. It proved to be a tidy but unspectacular start for Mendy.
He kept things simple and came out on top almost always. While it was nothing to write home about, given our recent worries in the position, a solid performance is worth its weight in gold.
According to the Metro, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard was also pleased with his latest recruit despite falling to Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur.
“I thought he was very good.”
Mendy was at hand to make a couple of saves and also came out to claim the cross. Something we have not seen at Chelsea for some time now.
“He made a couple of good saves. Came and caught a few balls. Very very pleased with every part of his game.”
While he did seem solid, Mendy was not without his failings. He looked uncertain in dealing with crosses and also failed to save any of Tottenham’s penalties.
However, given that he just signed for the club week, he should be given time to bed in. A tall hulking presence, he could turn out to be a dependable keeper once he gets sued to his surroundings.
Given Lampard’s comments, it would be fair to assume that Mendy will continue in goal against Crystal Palace.
The Blues have so far conceded six goals in three Premier League games. A clean sheet against the Eagles could be just what we need to turn our luck around.
