According to the club’s official site, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard offered words of encouragement to a distraught Mason Mount.
The youngster missed the decisive spot-kick as Spurs were knocked out on penalties by Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup fourth round.
With the game tied at 1-1, both teams faced a repeat of our semifinal clash from two years ago.
“He has my support at all times, and the team’s and everyone around him. You miss a penalty and it is a collective when you get this far in a game like this.”
Unfortunately, this time we received the short end of the stick and were knocked out. Someone had to bite the bullet and it turned out it was Mount who did.
Lampard does not believe the experience should act as a knockout blow for the youngster. In fact, he reiterated his belief that the 21-year-old will have a number of opportunities to set the record straight.
“I don’t think it should be a shattering blow. It is a disappointing night to get knocked out of the Carabao Cup, but Mason will have many more nights for this club and his country when he will play in games with huge importance on them and he will be the deciding factor in a positive way.”
Overall, it was not one of Mount’s best nights. He often struggled to make an impact and even looked tired.
However, that is to be expected given that he has played all five of our games this season. The youngster could do with a rest and come back stronger with a point to prove.
Chelsea next face Crystal Palace at home on Saturday. Having already dropped five points, anything less than a win is unthinkable.
While missing a decisive spot-kick at any level can affect a young player, Mount must take heart from the incident.
Tammy Abraham missed his spot-kick is last season’s UEFA Super Cup against Liverpool. He followed that up with a stellar season that saw him emerge as the club’s top scorer.
Mount let himself down on the pitch and it is there that he can also redeem himself.
