According to Sky Sports, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has admitted that Edouard Mendy is his first-choice goalkeeper at the club.
The 28-year-old joined Chelsea earlier this summer. It appears that he has quickly overtaken Kepa Arrizabalaga and Willy Caballero in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.
Mendy was ruled out of our 3-3 draw against Southampton at the weekend, thanks to an injury he picked up while on national duty. He returned to keep a clean sheet against Sevilla last night.
Speaking after the match, Lampard revealed in no uncertain terms that Mendy is in fact his current number one.
“At the moment yes; he’s shown his quality.”
He did however refuse to rule out that changes could be made in the future. It augurs well that the Chelsea boss looks to be focussing on merit rather than reputation.
“As it stands he is [the number one] but that’s always up for grabs. But the way he’s playing I’m very happy. I was pleased with the professional element to the win.”
The result was Lampard’s first goalless draw as Chelsea boss. In fact, Mendy is also the only Chelsea goalkeeper to have kept a clean sheet this season.
With two clean sheets in his first three appearances, the Senegalese international has not taken long to impress. Given the troubles faced by Kepa and Caballero, the Blues needed a dependable keeper. They appear to have gotten just that.
Although the draw against Sevilla at home is not the best of results, it gives us a solid start to this season’s Champions League.
Chelsea next face Krasnodar on the 28th of this month. A win away to the Russian will put us in a good position to qualify for the knockouts.
The Blues next face Manchester United in the Premier League this Saturday. It will be the first time the clubs face off since last season’s FA Cup semifinals.
Lampard prevailed over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that time. Hopefully, that trend will continue.
