Speaking to CBS Sports (h/t The Evening Standard), Chelsea star Christian Pulisic is happy to be entrusted with the iconic number 10 jersey.
The American international wears the same jersey for the US national team. He initially wore the number 22 upon joining Chelsea last summer. With Willian no more at the club, Pulisic was handed the vacant jersey left behind by the Brazilian.
Despite being hit by injuries, Pulisic enjoyed a fine debut season at Stamford Bridge. The American winger notched up 10 goals and making 11 assists despite enduring an injury-hit season.
“It meant a lot. It’s no secret that it’s been my favourite number. It’s the number I wanted to be.”
Before Willian, the number was worn by the world-class Eden Hazard. While his move to Real Madrid has been underwhelming, he was a key player at Chelsea.
Pulisic did a good job of filling in for the Belgian after joining the club last season. It can be argued that he was our most impactful player last campaign.
While Willian lacks the consistent game-changing abilities that Hazard brought to the table, he was nonetheless a consistent performer.
Pulisic hopes to do justice and carry on the legacy of all the players who have worn the number before him.
“I understand what it means and how much history it has, how many incredible players have worn it before me, but I see it as my favourite number. I just want to do well.”
Pulisic made his first appearance for Chelsea this season, off the bench against Crystal Palace last week.
He was sidelined with an injury that he sustained in our FA Cup final lsos to Arsenal last season.
