Chelsea wanted suitors to prepare £12.5m package to sign out-of-favour German star

Antonio Rudiger was on Chelsea’s loan list but the Blues wanted a huge amount to see the German leave

Chelsea wanted clubs to shell out £5million as a loan fee for Antonio Rudiger, according to The Athletic (h/t Daily Mail).

The German has fallen down the pecking order at the Blues under Frank Lampard. Thiago Silva’s signing and the rise of Kurt Zouma has seen Rudiger not make a single appearance for us this season.

Antonio Rudiger is keen to stay and win back his spot at Chelsea

The 27-year-old has still featured for Germany this season as they continue their Nations League campaign.

PSG, Everton and Tottenham were interested in landing the German (h/t Daily Mail). The Blues were willing to let Rudiger leave but wanted clubs to fork out £5million to loan him (h/t Daily Mail).

The report adds that Chelsea also wanted clubs to cover Rudiger’s wages of £150,000 per week, which amounts to £7.5m per year.

That asking price of £12.5m put clubs off and Rudiger has remained at Stamford Bridge (h/t Daily Mail).

Lampard hands a lifeline

Rudiger was ever-present in our defence last season as we just about made it to the Champions League. However, he faces a lot of competition to get games this season.

The Blues have Fikayo Tomori and Andreas Christensen to challenge Zouma and Silva but Lampard has stated that Rudiger could work his way back into the team.

The gaffer claimed the transfer window’s closure could be a blessing for Rudiger too (h/t Daily Mail)

“The beauty of the window now being shut is we can get to work, we know what the squad is. Toni is the same as every other player on that one.”

It will be interesting to see what happens with Rudiger as we have a lot of options for the centre-back position.

The German is a talented defender and could get a game or two. However, he will have to work extremely hard to regain his starting XI spot, especially after the arrival of the experienced Silva.
