Chelsea to battle Manchester United and Bayern Munich for Denis Zakaria
According to German publication Bild (h/t The Sun), Chelsea are set to face off against Manchester United and Bayern Munich for Denis Zakaria.
The 23-year-old came through the youth ranks at Swiss club Servette and spent a couple of seasons with BSC Young Boys before making the switch to Borussia Monchengladbach in 2017.
Since the move, the box-to-box midfielder has grown into one of the best in his position in the German top-flight. He featured 96 times across all competitions, scoring 8 goals and assisting six more.
Zakaria has two years left on his contract with the Bundesliga side. He has been out of action since sustaining a knee injury in March.
Despite that, both Chelsea and United are still determined to land the player. According to the report, he could be allowed to leave next summer.
Declan Rice is Frank Lampard’s preferred choice to add to his midfield. However, with the 21-year-old staying put at West Ham United, Zakaria is a viable alternative.
European champions Bayern Munich are also in the for the player. Premier League champions Liverpool were also interested in the Swiss international but it remains to be seen if they still are.
The interest in Zakaria is a testament to his ability as a footballer. With the likes of N’Golo Kante not getting any younger, bringing in the 23-year-old is an option we could pursue.
