As confirmed by the club’s official site, Chelsea defender Malang Sarr has joined Portuguese champions, Porto, on loan.
The 21-year-old joined the club on a free after his contract at Nice expired earlier this summer. A player for the future, Sarr will have to wait a bit to make his Chelsea bow.
The plan was always for the young defender to go out on loan for this season. At Porto, he will get an opportunity to play more regularly and continue his development.
Moreover, the Portuguese giants can also offer him the chance of experiencing Champions League football. Drawn in the same group as Manchester City, Olympiacos and Marseille, Sarr can test himself against the best.
Having signed a five-year deal at Chelsea, Sarr has plenty of time to make an impact at Stamford Bridge.
Having come up through the ranks at Nice, Sarr made his first-team bow for the French side at the age of 17.
Primarily a centre-back, he is versatile enough to play as a left-back. Standing 6ft tall, Sarr is a dominant athlete who can be coached to become an overwhelming force.
He has represented France from Under-16 to Under-21 levels and captained their Under-18s. Sarr also played at the 2019 Under-21 Euros.
With both Antonio Rudiger and Fikayo Tomori still at the club, the Blues have five centre-backs to choose from.
This would have seen Sarr play a largely peripheral role. Going out on loan is indeed the best move for all parties involved.
