“Defence wins titles” – Chelsea star warns his teammates following Southampton collapse

Chelsea star Timo Werner warns he Blues defence following another collapse

According to Premier League Productions (h/t The Mirror), Chelsea star Timo Werner has reminded his teammates that defence wins titles.

This comes after the Blues let in three goals once again and dropped two more points against Southampton. Unless the defence can tighten things at the back, the Blues will find it difficult to compete for titles at the top.

It was Chelsea’s second 3-3 draw in their last three league games. Worryingly so, we have now dropped seven points in our first five Premier League games.

Werner’s annoyance is understandable given his contribution on the night. The German ace grabbed himself a brace to put Chelsea in the driving seat going into the break.

“In the end think it’s not the offence that wins titles. In Germany we always say defence wins titles. I think that’s true.”

However, a Kai Havertz mistake ensured Danny Ings halved the deficit for the Saints before half-time. A comical exchange between Kurt Zouma and Kepa Arrizabalaga saw Che Adams draw the Saints level in the second half.

Havertz looked to have won us the match, only for Southampton to steal a point in stoppage time.

The result left Werner frustrated. He went on to add that the team will have to raise their game in order to succeed.

“I think we are Chelsea, we want to battle for titles.”

He accepts that the Blues have a problem at the back. We have now conceded none games in just five Premier League games so far this season. It is clear that this cannot continue.

“I don’t know if we have a problem but in the end the last three games we concede six goals and that’s not where we want to be.”

Werner’s comments may sound harsh to some but are true. Our poor defence has been a problem since last season and is nothing new to be surprised about.

The team is still finding its bearings. Hopefully, we will do it sooner than later.
