According to The Athletic (h/t The Mirror), Chelsea duo Billy Gilmour and Fikayo Tomori could be on their way out of the club on loan in January.
The duo enjoyed breakout seasons last time around and are amongst the promising young talents at the club.
However, following a summer of recruitment, they could be set for a peripheral role this time around. With the club already knocked out of the Carabao Cup, opportunities could be at a premium.
Tomori was a subject of interest from Everton and West Ham United in the summer. He was also linked with a switch to Ligue 1 side Rennes earlier in the summer window.
The defender looked set to join West Ham, only for him to change his mind at the last minute. Still at Chelsea, it can be argued that he is the fourth-choice centre-back behind Thiago Silva, Kurt Zouma, and Andreas Christensen.
A move away from the Bridge could help Tomori garner more game time. This could help get his development back on track.
Gilmour meanwhile is recovering from a knee injury that ended his 2019/20 campaign prematurely.
The 19-year-old is expected to recover and return to fitness by the end of the year. With N’Golo Kante fit and Jorginho back in contention, Gilmour will have to earn his place in the Blues XI.
It appears unlikely that he will be brought back straight into the first-team after spending a number of months out injured.
While we have strengthened our squad this summer, the development of the talents at the club should not be overlooked.
Given our squad, it is not possible to give every player equal opportunities. Going out on loan to secure playing time elsewhere could be the way going forward.
