Speaking on the Here We Go Podcast (h/t Metro), reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Chelsea came close to signing Miralem Pjanic in the summer, before his transfer to Barcelona.
Pjanic had been with Juventus since 2016 and had established himself as one of the best in his positions in Europe. And, as per the report, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard was keen on securing his transfer in the window gone by.
A swap deal between the two clubs was under consideration, with Pjanic moving to the Bridge, while Jorginho went to Italy, to join forces with ex-Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri. (h/t Metro)
But, Juventus dropped their interest in the deal after Sarri was sacked, while Pjanic turned down the transfer in favour of a switch to Barcelona. (h/t Metro)
Pjanic is certainly a quality operator and could have been a good addition at the club. However, Jorginho has continued to prove his worth with impressive performances every time given a chance and is a key member of the side under Lampard.
Furthermore, he is two years younger than Pjanic and should offer a little bit more longevity as well.
The Italian international was also linked to a late swoop to fellow London outfit Arsenal as well. However, Chelsea didn’t allow the transfer as it would strengthen a direct rival. (h/t Metro)
While Chelsea turned down a chance to let Jorginho leave, there were a few exits on the deadline day. Tiemoue Bakayoko joined Napoli on loan, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek made the temporary switch to Fulham.
Jorginho has scored three goals in three Premier League games this season already, while assisting one more as well.
