A View From The Bridge

Lampard could be handed £50m transfer kitty in January

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard could have £50m available to him for transfers in January

According to Football.London, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard could raise £50m by selling deadwood in January.

The estimated fee can be obtained by selling out-of-favour players like Marcos Alonso, Emerson Palmieri, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Baba Rahman.

According to the estimation, the club will have to take a significant hit on Kepa Arrizabalaga. The Spaniard is the world’s most expensive keeper, having made a £72m move from Athletic Bilbao in 2018.

Unfortunately, he has failed to live up to expectations and has fallen down the pecking order at Chelsea. This has also adversely affected his valuation as given in the report.

Speaking after the Champions League fixture against Sevilla, Lampard confirmed that Edouard Mendy is his first-choice goalkeeper. The Senegalese star has impressed so far and could keep Kepa out of the line-up if he continues to perform.

Emerson, meanwhile, has been linked with a return to Serie A. The Italian stayed put at Chelsea this summer and at 26, he has resale value.

The other left-back at the club, Marcos Alonso also appears to be on his way out of the club. The Spaniard fell out with Lampard after his disastrous performance against West Bromwich Albion.

He has not played since and has fallen down the pecking order following the arrival of Ben Chilwell.

Forgotten Chelsea man Baba Rahman too is another player Lampard can sell to raise funds. The Ghanian has barely featured for the Blues and has often gone out on loan.

The Blues have had a busy summer where they have spent around £250million to bring in new players. Despite that, a number of out-of-favour stars remain, who need to be moved on.

Doing so in January will free up funds in transfer fee and wages. We can then reinvest this to bring in players who can contribute to our effort.
