According to Spanish publication Diario AS (h/t Mirror), struggling Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga is eyeing a return to homeland Spain.
The 25-year-old is in his third season at Stamford Bridge. He joined the Blues in 2018 from Athletic Bilbao for £71m – a world record fee for a goalkeeper.
However, the Spanish international hasn’t been convincing enough between the sticks during his time at the club. Kepa was axed from the starting XI by manager Frank Lampard on multiple occasions last season.
And while he started the new season as first-choice, he has once again been relegated to the bench after the blunder against Liverpool. Indeed, Lampard opted to go with Willy Caballero for Chelsea’s game against West Brom this past weekend.
Once new signing Edouard Mendy is fully fit and ready for action, Kepa could potentially be relegated to the third-choice goalkeeper at the Bridge.
And, as a result, the Spanish international is now keen on bringing an end to his torrid spell in England and return to his homeland. (h/t Mirror)
The report does not mention any specific club, but claims that there is interest in taking Kepa back to La Liga this summer.
It goes without saying that Kepa has struggled to justify the investment made in him by the club. And with Mendy now joining the club, it may well be time for the Blues to part ways with him.
There’s just one week left for the transfer window to close. It will be interesting to see if any club does approach to sign him before then.
