Timo Werner was unsure of his decision to join Chelsea after Bayern loss
Speaking to German publication BILD (h/t Mirror), Chelsea striker Timo Werner was initially worried that he was making the wrong call in joining the Blues.
The 24-year-old became the club’s second major signing following the capture of Hakim Ziyech.
He admits that our defeat to Bayern Munich in last season’s Champions League made him reconsider his decision to move to Stamford Bridge.
The Bundesliga champions taught Frank Lampard’s side a humbling lesson as they defeated us 3-0 at the Bridge in the first leg of the round of 16 tie. The impact of the defeat was felt as far as Leipzig, where Werner was playing at the time.
The Blues also lost the second leg as the Germans went on to win the competition. Werner had a number of suitors and would not have found it hard to make a move elsewhere.
“I would be lying if I said it wasn’t like that. The 3-0 home defeat of Chelsea in the first leg against Bayern hadn’t exactly spoken in favour of going to London.”
Thankfully, the move went through and Werner has emerged as one of our best players in the opening weeks of the new campaign.
While he is yet to score, Werner has won two penalties against Brighton and Liverpool.
Weak no more!
As someone who was a part of the Leipzig team that proved a challenge to Bayern, Werner’s fears were justified.
However, the Chelsea team today is a different beast to the one that fell to the Germans last season. The striker believes the loss played a key role in convincing Chelsea to strengthen.
“With Bayern showing Chelsea their weak points, the club was able to work on the pieces of the puzzle in order to catch up with the future Champions League winners Bayern.”
The Blues have invested heavily and now have the tools to challenge just about any team in world football on their day.

The Blues are yet to incorporate all of their summer signings into the team. Injuries and a lack of match fitness have seen certain players eased into the side.
Hopefully, it will not be far before we see the side firing on all cylinders.
