Edouard Mendy closes in on Chelsea switch
According to Matt Law of The Telegraph, Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
In a tweet made yesterday, the journalist confirmed that a deal has been Rennes for the shot-stopper. However, Mendy is yet to have his medical, with it set to take place this week.
The 28-year-old has been with Rennes for only a year, having signed from fellow French club Stade de Reims last summer in a deal worth a paltry £3.6m.
Once the deal is completed, it will be Chelsea’s sixth major signing this summer. The Blues have acted with intent to strengthen their side ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.
Current number one Kepa Arrizabalaga has struggled to impress, necessitating the need to bring in a new goalkeeper.
The Spaniard once again shot himself in the foot during the 2-0 loss to Liverpool yesterday.
Already down to 10 men and a goal down, Kepa’s botched clearance was put in by Sadio Mane to extend Jurgen Klopp’s side’s lead.
His confidence looks shot and the arrival of Mendy could not have come at a better time. Being taken out of the firing line will help deflect the focus off Kepa, giving him the opportunity to build up morale behind the scenes.
Blues boss Frank Lampard had earlier admitted that Mendy would compete with Kepa for the number one spot. This will hopefully help the Spaniard rediscover his best.

The loss to Liverpool is a setback at this point in time. It is fair to say that we put up a proper fight in the first half despite having a number of players unavailable.
With the likes of Thiago Silva, Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic and Ben Chilwell all still to return, things can only get better for the Blues.
With 36 games still to go in the Premier League, there is much to play for.
