Chelsea outcast Davide Zappacosta set to join Genoa on loan
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea outcast Davide Zappacosta is set to join Italian side Genoa on a season-long loan.
The 28-year-old joined the club from Torino in 2017. He has failed to make an impact and has won just 52 caps for the Blues.
Zappacosta spent last season on loan at Roma. An anterior cruciate ligament injury saw him make just nine appearances all campaign.
According to a report by Football.london, he is set to have his medical today ahead of sealing his return to the Italian top flight.
The player was keen to stay on and impress at Roma. However, that does not appear to be the case with a move to Genoa all but done. (h/t Football.london)
A right-back by trade, Zappacosta would have found it difficult to feature at Chelsea this season. Skipper Cesar Azpilicueta is the first-choice right-back with Reece James proving to be a fine backup.
With two more years to on his current deal, it is debatable if the defender has played his last game for the club. The fact that he is being loaned out would auggest that.
While it would have made more sense for Chelsea to sell him on a permanent basis, a loan will have to do for now. Also having attracted attention from Fiorentina, a good season at The Marassi will only draw more attention to his skills.
