Edouard Mendy completes Chelsea medical ahead of a summer switch
According to Chelsea reporter Simon Phillips (h/t The Express), Rennes star Edouard Mendy has already completed his Chelsea medical.
The 28-year-old has emerged as a key target for the Blues and is set to compete with Kepa Arrizabalaga for the starting spot at Stamford Bridge.
According to The Athletic’s Adam Leventhal (h/t The Express), Mendy is now close to completing his move to Chelsea.
Once the deal is completed, it will be Chelsea’s sixth major first-team signing this window. The Blues have acted decisively to strengthen their side ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.
As per the report, the transfer will cost Chelsea a relatively modest £18.5million. Mendy was absent from the Rennes squad that faced off against Nimes earlier today.
Rennes agreed to a deal with Chelsea on Friday following a meeting in which our improved offer was discussed. The player too is keen to make the move, leaving the French side with little choice in the matter.
It has been a meteoric rise for the Senegalese shot-stopper over the past few months. Having joined Rennes only last summer, he went on to play a pivotal role as they finished third in Ligue 1. This saw them qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
Adding Mendy to our setup strengthens what was a weak spot in our squad last summer. Kepa has reacted positively to the potential signing and is ready to fight for his spot.
