Lampard tells Chelsea academy product what he needs to do to earn starting berth

Frank Lampard urges Callum Hudson-Odoi to work harder in training

As reported by The Guardian, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has called on youngster Callum Hudson-Odoi to work harder and stay focused in order to earn a place in the team’s starting XI.

A product of the Blues’ academy, Hudson-Odoi is regarded as one of the finest prospects to have come through the ranks at the club. However, after showing signs of great promise early on in his career, he has struggled to build upon it.

Hudson-Odoi endured an injury-riddled 2019/20 season. As a result, he was restricted to just 7 Premier League starts. The Englishman had some off-the-field problems that cast him in a poor light as well, while the performances never reached the levels expected.

Following the departures of Willian and Pedro, the youngster was expected to get a bigger role this season. However, Lampard chose to bench him for the season opener last week, in spite of the absence of Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic.

Instead, the manager opted to play two attacking midfielders – Mason Mount and Kai Havertz on the wings. And speaking on his situation, Lampard has called for more focus from his teenage starlet. (h/t The Guardian)

“With Callum he has to absolutely focus on the work he puts in on the training ground day in, day out. Callum is a young developing player.

“The facts remain the same for all young players. They have to work every day to put themselves in the frame to start.”

Hudson-Odoi showed great promise when he burst onto the scenes. But the interest from Bayern Munich last summer seemed to have turned his head.

Amid speculations that the German giants might make a move for him again, the youngster needs to ignore all the noise and focus at the task at hand.
