According to German publication Sport Bild (h/t Daily Mail), new signing Kai Havertz gave up a £9million transfer bonus to move to Chelsea.
The German sensation became the club’s fifth major summer signing when he put pen to paper to become a Blue last week.
The 21-year-old was linked with a move to Stamford Bridge all summer. With discussions between Chelsea and Bayer Leverkusen dragging on, the player decided to take matters into his own hands.
According to the report, Havertz passed on his cut of the transfer fee. This saw Leverkusen retain the full amount and the player get his dream move.
The move to Chelsea is one that is set to reward Havertz handsomely. The German international’s five-year deal will see him pocket a salary of around €100million.
One of the highest earners at the club, Havertz will take home nearly £18m per year in wages.
The German star will don the number 29 jersey that was previously occupied by defender Fikaro Tomori. The Chelsea youth product will don the number 14 jersey and has also been linked with a loan move to Everton. (h/t Chelsea)
Havertz sported number 29 for four years at Leverkusen. If he keeps up his development and progresses as expected, there is no reason why his number wouldn’t go on to become iconic at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea face Brighton in their first game of the 2020/21 Premier League campaign. It remains to be seen if Havertz will make his Chelsea debut at the Amex.
Joined by international teammate Timo Werner, the German duo could lead Chelsea to greater heights in the coming seasons if all goes well.
