Speaking to Stadium Astro (h/t Metro), Manchester United legend Gary Neville has predicted where Chelsea will finish next season.
He believes the Blues are set for yet another fourth-place finish. Neville has backed Manchester City to win the league while surprisingly predicting United to finish as runners-up.
Frank Lampard’s first season in charge ended on a promising note as the Blues secured Champions League qualification.
This proved to be important as Roman Abramovich has since backed his manager in the summer transfer market.
Chelsea have been the most active team in the window and have signed six players so far. The likes of Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva are key additions to the first team.
The Blues have also signed youngsters Malang Sarr and Mbuyamba. The duo is one to watch out for in the future.
Our activity is far from done with the likes of Kai Havertz and Edouard Mendy still on the club’s radar. If both the deals get over the line, Lampard will have a much better squad to call on next season.
With great power comes great expectations. Having been backed generously, the Blues boss will be expected to close the gap on Liverpool and Manchester City.
Both United and Chelsea finished miles behind Liverpool and City last season. While we have added considerably to close the gap at least on paper, United have only added the admittedly impressive Donny van de Beek.
The fact that Neville would suggest they are good enough to be called the second-best team in the land is nothing short of preposterous.
Neville’s predictions scream of bias. There is no way that the current United squad is better than either us or even Liverpool.
The fact that he believes they will finish as the second-best team in the country is just preposterous. But then to see us prove him wrong on the field will be the best way to showcase his error in judgment. Personally we would be surprised if they finished in the top four.
