Frank Lampard reveals how Chelsea beat Liverpool and Man United to Timo Werner
According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has revealed how the club won the race for Timo Werner.
The German ace is one of the best young strikers on the continent and had garnered interest from a number of teams. Ultimately, it was Chelsea who pulled off the signing.
Lampard and Petr Cech made a trip to Germany before the lockdown to present their vision to the player.
Champions Liverpool were in the driving seat for the player’s signature. However, after meeting with Lampard, Werner decided to move to Chelsea instead.
“I tried to sell the club to the best of my ability when I spoke to players. Petr in his role does the same.”
Now a Blue, he will lead the charge for Lampard’s men as they look to close the gap on the Reds. It is fitting that he could make his bow at Stamford Bridge against Liverpool in our first home game this season.
“With a player like Timo, we were very keen to bring him in. He needs to feel that from us. I loved everything that he said to me in those conversations.”
Having won the race off the pitch, it is now time for the Blues and also Werner to showcase what they can do.
Chelsea kick off their 2020/21 Premier League campaign against Brighton and Hove Albion tomorrow night.
