Chelsea boss Frank Lampard praises Reece James after Brighton win
According to the club’s official site, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has praised the performance of Reece James in the season opener against Brighton and Hove Albion.
The Blues opened their 2020/21 Premier League campaign with a visit to the Amex Stadium. Jorginho gave us the lead in the first half after the impressive Timo Werner was brought down in the box.
Brighton equalised in the second half through Leandro Trossard. The clubs stayed level for just two minutes as James put Chelsea ahead with a brilliant finish.
Kurt Zouma scored a third to ensure the Blues opened the season with a win.
“Reece has got that in him, he is a player of such quality. You try and get him in areas where he can be a threat.”
Praising the effort, Lampard admitted that the strike brought him to his feet. It was James’ first Premier League strike for Chelsea.
“Reece James’ goal, it had me off my seat and we needed it, we weren’t at our best in that period.”
It is fair to say that James’ immediate response was the best way for the club to react to getting back on level terms. The fighting spirit augurs well for us going into the new season.
The game also saw two of our summer recruits Timo Werner and Kai Havertz make their competitive debuts.
While Werner was dangerous, Havertz did not have the best of starts. Given his ability, it is only a matter of time before he stars for the club.
Competition makes one better
James believes the addition of quality players has raised the expectations of those already at the club.
“As the games go on we are only to get stronger. There are new players in the team so we have to gel and get stronger week by week.”
