Frank Lampard confirms Edouard Mendy is undergoing Chelsea medical

According to the club’s official Twitter handle, Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is undergoing his Chelsea medical.

The news was confirmed by manager Frank Lampard in his pre-match press conference against Barnsley. The Blues face the Championship side in the Carabao Cup third round fixture at Stamford Bridge tomorrow.

His signing should come as a relief for fans, who saw Kepa Arrizabalaga once again struggle at the weekend.

The Spaniard gifted Liverpool their second goal of the night as the Blues fell to their first defeat of the season.

Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is currently undergoing his Chelsea medical.

In the aftermath of the incident, Telegraph reporter Matt Law had confirmed that a deal for Mendy was all but agreed. According to him, a medical was the only remaining formality.

With the player currently undergoing it, one would hope that the transfer is now on the verge of completion.

The 28-year-old has been with Rennes for only a year, having signed from fellow Ligue 1 side Stade de Reims last summer in a deal worth a paltry £3.6m.

Once the deal is completed, it will be Chelsea’s sixth major signing this summer. He is expected to compete with Kepa for the starting spot.

It will hopefully bring the best out of both players as Chelsea finally address what has been a problematic position since last season.

Given his errors against Liverpool, it remains to be seen if he will be benched in favour of Willy Caballero against Barnsley.

The Blues have enjoyed an excellent summer. The players will now have to perform on the pitch.
