According to The Athletic, Chelsea were offered the services of Spanish midfielder Thiago Alcantara, before he joined Liverpool earlier this week.
The 29-year-old brought an end to a seven-year association with German giants Bayern Munich after having led them to a treble in 2019/20. Thiago signed for Liverpool in a deal worth just £20m, an absolute steal for a player of his quality.
However, it could have all been very different as Thiago was offered to Chelsea before his transfer to Liverpool was finalised. (h/t The Athletic)
Chelsea weren’t the only club to have been offered a shot at landing the Spanish international, as Arsenal, too, had been provided with an opportunity to make a bid for him. (h/t The Athletic)
This was done by Bayern as they tried to start a bidding war for the midfielder and drive up his transfer fee, considering that he was in the final year of his contract. (h/t The Athletic)
However, their endeavours weren’t met with the desired reactions as Chelsea turned down the chance to land the 29-year-old. (h/t The Athletic)
The availability of a world-class star like Thiago, who was coming on the back of a brilliant performance in the UEFA Champions League final will surely have appealed to Chelsea.
However, as it is the club already has plenty of options in the middle of the park already. With Jorginho, N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic we have a solid midfield unit, while the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Billy Gilmour, Mason Mount and even Kai Havertz are options at the manager’s disposal.
It will be interesting to see how he fares at Liverpool.
