Chelsea agree £25m deal for Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea have agreed a deal worth £25m for the signing of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy from Ligue 1 outfit Rennes.

The 28-year-old joined Rennes only last summer, but went on to essay a pivotal role as they finished third in Ligue 1 and qualified for the UEFA Champions League.

Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation had been a cause of concern following last season. Kepa Arrizabalaga hardly inspired confidence with his shaky performances, while Willy Caballero is in the twilight of his career.

So, manager Frank Lampard was intent on signing a new goalkeeper before the new campaign began. A number of names had been mentioned over the course of the summer. However, the club seem to have narrowed down on Mendy. (h/t Daily Mail)

It is claimed that the 28-year-old was pulled from training with his teammates after a deal was agreed. And soon, he was off to London for his medical, after holding talks with his agent and Rennes president Nicolas Holveck. (h/t Daily Mail)

Mendy, once he arrives, will become the seventh major arrival at the club, following the signings of Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Malang Sarr, Thiago Silva and Kai Havertz.

Experienced and coming on the back of a good season, he ought to provide intense competition to Kepa for the goalkeeping spot in the coming season.

Chelsea have been knocking it out of the park in the transfer market so far. Hopefully, we are able to achieve the same level of success on the field once the season kicks off.
