According to a report from The Times, Chelsea are finally closing in on the signing of English left-back Ben Chilwell after making a breakthrough in talks with Leicester City.
It is no secret that Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has been in the market for a new left-back. And Chilwell has been the top target for the Blues, with the club chasing his signature for a while now.
However, Leicester City’s valuation of £80m for the England international had been holding up the deal. But that seems to have changed now. As per The Times, Chelsea have finally been able to come to an agreement with the Foxes over the transfer fee.
The fee is reportedly lower than the £80m that Leicester were demanding earlier. However, it is still said to eclipse the £68m that Bayern Munich paid for Lucas Hernandez last year, meaning Chilwell is set to become the world’s most expensive left-back. (h/t The Times)
It is also being reported that Chilwell has already cleared out his locker at Leicester’s Belvoir Drive training ground. He is penned to undergo a medical with us on Monday. (h/t The Times)
Reports on Friday had claimed that Manchester United had made a late attempt to hijack our efforts to land the 23-year-old Chilwell. However, it seems like we have once again trumped a rival for the signing of an in-demand player.
With Chilwell set to join Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, and the Kai Havertz pursuit also likely to bear fruit in a few days, exciting times lie ahead for Chelsea fans.
