“The next step”: Club chief opens exit door for impressive Chelsea target

Bayer Leverkusen CEO drops Kai Havertz exit hint

Speaking to Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger (h/t Express), Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro has claimed that superstar Kai Havertz has wished to take the next step in his career, amid Chelsea interest.

The 21-year-old enjoyed a sensational 2019/20 campaign with the German giants, as he helped them to a fifth-place in the Bundesliga and a quarter-final run in the Europa League, which came to an end earlier this week.

Havertz ended the season with a highly impressive return of 18 goals and 9 assists from 45 matches in all competitions. His exploits with Leverkusen have led to serious interest from Chelsea, who have made the 21-year-old the top transfer target this summer. (h/t Express)

Havertz is a top target for Chelsea

Frank Lampard has already strengthened the attacking department with the additions of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech. But with the departures of Willian and Pedro, we are in need of more quality and depth in the final third, which Havertz would provide.

Leverkusen have largely been coy over the future of the 21-year-old German international. However, now, club CEO Carro has admitted that Havertz has expressed his desire to take the next step in his career. (h/t Express)

“Kai has expressed the wish to take the next step. I cannot say at the moment whether this will work in the near future or not.”

Carro further insisted that talks over his future should take place imminently following the club’s exit from Europa League at the hands of Inter Milan.

Chelsea are yet to make a bid for Havertz

Leverkusen are demanding £90m for their prized asset, which may be a bone of contention in negotiations between the two clubs.

Hopefully, we are able to conclude a deal at the earliest possible, so that Havertz has some time to gel in with his new teammates before the 2020/21 season begins on September 12.
