Report: Chelsea keen on teenage Nigerian sensation

Chelsea are interested in Paul Ibahadon

According to All Nigeria Soccer (h/t Birmingham Mail), Chelsea have entered the race for Nigerian sensation Paul Ibahadon.

The 15-year-old looked to be on his way to Aston Villa earlier this year. The move however broke down over clearance issues. (h/t Birmingham Mail)

It could prove to be a blessing for Chelsea who are now keen on the player. Born in Italy, Ibahadon was a rising star in the Atalanta ranks. However, he was forced to move to England due to family reasons.

Paul Ibahadon has been compared to Semi Ajayi

The Blues are not the only team in the fray for the youngster. The likes of West Bromwich Albion, Birmingham City, and Nottingham Forest are all keen on signing the teenage defender. (h/t Birmingham Mail)

According to the report, Chelsea scouts have invited the youngster to the club for a trial.

Compared to Nigeria international Semi Ajayi, Ibahadon is a ball-playing central defender who is composed, strong and quick. he can also do a job playing as a holding midfielder.

Frank Lampard has shown he is open to nurturing youth

Doing so is a testament of his ability on the ball. The versatility is an added bonus that should give his side a number of options.

Under Lampard, Chelsea have shown they are willing to promote and develop youth. Ibahadon could accelerate his development by joining a number of talented youth already on Chelsea’s rolls.

The Blues look set to have a busy transfer window. In the midst of bringing in the best talents, it is reassuring to know that the club has not given up on developing youth as well.

Whether we can beat off competition for the Super Eagle or not remains to be seen.

Lampard is keen to revamp his defence going into next season. The Chelsea backline has flattered to impress in what has been akin to open season at the back.

With the club keen to compete for top honours, it is imperative that we tighten ourselves at the back. At 15, Ibahadon is too young to make an instant impact. However, if he develops as expected, he could become a key player for us in the future.
