A View From The Bridge

“No corona discount” – European giants tell Chelsea to pay up for attacking sensation

Chelsea asked to pay up to secure Kai Havertz

According to Sport Buzzer (h/t Daily Mail), Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller has revealed that there are no new updates regarding Kai Havertz to Chelsea.

The German legend has dismissed the notion of the Blues securing a corona discount on the highly desired footballer. Chelsea will now have to fork up the £90million that Leverkusen have demanded.

The Stamford Bridge outfit are long-term admirers of the German sensation. Despite being just 21, Havertz has considerable experience at the highest level. The Leverkusen ace has scored an impressive 48 goals in his last 87 games for Leverkusen.

Bayer Leverkusen are unwilling to reduce their asking price for Kai Havertz

The coronavirus pandemic has affected a number of clubs across the game. However, Chelsea will not benefit from it at least as far as the negotiations for Havertz goes.

“But corona or no corona, this is not the case with exceptional players like Havertz or Jadon Sancho. There is no corona discount for them.”

Voeller also admitted that Leverkusen would indeed love to keep hold of their star man if they can. In spite of the huge fee involved, the prospect of losing such a gifted player can have an effect on the field.

Chelsea hope to sign Kai Havertz this summer

The same happened with RB Leipzig regarding Timo Werner. The German ace’s move to Chelsea left Julian Nagelsmann’s men without their top scorer going into the Champions League.

The German eventually fell to PSG in the semifinals. It is debatable if Werner could have made a difference. However, there is no argument that his absence left a glaring hole in the Leipzig attack.

Chelsea and Leverkusen are still some off regarding their valuations of the player. The Blues have made a bid closer to £70m, which is short of Leverkusen’s asking price.

The difference could be bridged using additional fees and instalments. This should bring the complete package for Havertz up to Leverkusen’s valuation. (h/t Express)

Havertz is keen on a move and has already agreed to switch to Stamford Bridge. Hopefully, the saga will end with Chelsea making their third high-profile signing of the summer.
