Frank Lampard convinced Marina Granovskaia to overlook her 30+ rule for Thiago Silva
According to Duncan Castles on the Transfer window podcast (h/t Daily Star), Frank Lampard convinced Marina Granovskaia to look past her age bias regarding Thiago Silva.
The Chelsea director is usually against signing players over the age of 30. That being said, the Blues are closing in on signing 35-year-old Silva on a free transfer.
“If Thiago Silva comes in, it will be a break with that policy and convention for Granovskaia.”
The Samba star will pen a two-year deal that will see him earn £100,000-a-week at Stamford Bridge. It may not have come to pass if not for Lampard.
The Blues defence was a constant source of irritation for Lampard throughout last season. An obvious Achilles heel, improvements were necessary if the club was serious about competing for trophies.
Entrusting a soon-to-be 36-year-old to help bring it about may seem fanciful. Lampard however believes Silva is just the man for the job.
Castles believes the player’s good leadership and personality played a major part in Chelsea sanctioning the deal.
“I think it’s his quality as a player and his experience at the very top level. Leadership, good attitude as a player.”
The move is however not without it’s own risks. Silva has suffered from injuries during his time, causing concerns regarding his ability to last a season.
He has however enjoyed considerable campaign after the Ligue 1 season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fears, however, persist owing to the high octane nature of the Premier League
Despite the risk involved, bringing in a player of Silva’s quality especially for free is something we could ill afford to pass on.
“There has been a lack of quality and you definitely get both of those by bringing Thiago Silva in.”

We are glad to see that the club were willing to bend their rules and trust the manager’s opinion on a player he wanted.
This appears to show the club’s faith in his ability. It has so far been a window to remember for Chelsea.
