Speaking to French publication L’Equipe (h/t Football.london), Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has sent a warning to his competitors Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham going into next season.
The trio are set to battle each other for the right to lead the Chelsea attack next season. Abraham started off the current campaign as the ace striker.
However, injuries and a loss of form have seen Giroud step up and take his chances. The Frenchman has featured regularly for Frank Lampard’s side since the restart.
With Werner now officially a blue, the bar has been raised for next season. Giroud is however in no mood to play second fiddle and has warned his teammates of the same.
“Werner hasn’t been recruited to sit on the bench. But I will do everything I can to give headaches to the coach when it comes to making his choice.”
The addition of a world-class frontman comes as no surprise for Giroud. Rather than worry about it, he is relishing the opportunity to stay motivated.
“Werner’s transfer is an additional motivation and it was inevitable that the club recruits a striker.”
The Frenchman also revealed that he is open to staying on at Chelsea beyond his current deal that expires next summer. He believes there is a few good years left in him and is keen to do them justice.
Giroud will go up against his former side Arsenal in the FA Cup final on Saturday. The Frenchman opened the scoring against the Gunners in last year’s Europa League final.
Considering the form he is in, we would not put it past him to repeat it at Wembley.
Often criticized by fans and rivals, Giroud is an underrated player who does his talking on the pitch. He scored six goals in nine games since the restart and played a crucial role in us finishing in the top four.
His performances earnt him a well deserved 12-month extension. Werner and Abraham better watch out. Despite being 33 years old, Giroud is far from done.
