According to reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Thiago Silva, with the Brazilian defender set to pen a two-year contract with the club.
The 35-year-old is a free agent currently, after his contract with French champions Paris Saint-Germain expired. Silva played his last game for the Parisians this past weekend, featuring in the UEFA Champions League final defeat against Bayern Munich.
And, it has been since claimed that the seasoned campaigner is on his way to the Premier League, with a transfer to Chelsea on the cards.
Fabrizio Romano reported late on Sunday that Chelsea were in pole position to land the veteran Brazilian defender. The journalist has now claimed that Silva will be penning a two-year contract with the Blues. The deal will be worth €6m per season.
It will amount to a weekly wage of £110,000-a-week, which is half of what he used to make at Paris Saint-Germain. (h/t Daily Star)
There will be some concerns, given the Brazilian’s age. However, Silva was a rock-solid presence at the back for PSG over the course of the last season and impressed in the finals of the UCL as well.
Silva’s potential signing would be a boost for us, considering our defensive mishaps last season. His arrival would provide Frank Lampard with someone who can be a leader of the defence and organise the backline. That is a quality we lacked this past season.
It is against the club’s policy to hand multi-year contracts to players over 30. But, it seems like they have broken the rule for Silva.
