Chelsea keen to sign 28-year-old Ligue 1 ace to provide competition for under-fire star

Chelsea keen to bring in Edouard Mendy to compete with Kepa Arrizabalaga

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea are keen on Edouard Mendy to provide competition for Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The 28-year-old spent his whole career in France and has made over 100 appearances in the top two French divisions. Mendy signed for Rennes last summer and has since made 34 appearances for the club. Four of these came in the Europa League. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Mendy is capped by Senegal at the senior level. He has won two caps for the lions of Teranga.

Chelsea are keen on Edouard Mendy

Chelsea head of goalkeeping Christophe Lollichon who was earlier at Rennes is a fan of the Ligue 1 keeper. The French side is also in negotiations to loan Blues youngster Fikayo Tomori next season. (h/t Daily Mail)

The Blues have already spent £86.4million on bringing in Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner. With Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell, and a new centre-back also on the club’s radar, our spending could exceed £200m. (h/t Daily Mail)

This has prompted the club to look for cheaper options in other areas.

Frank Lampard is not convinced by Kepa Arrizabalaga

A goalkeeper is also on the agenda given the performances of number one Kepa Arrizabalaga. The Spaniard, who is the most expensive keeper in history, has done precious little to justify that title.

His performances forced Frank Lampard’s hand, with the Blues boss benching him on two separate stretches last season.

The Blues boss replaced Kepa with reserve custodian Willy Caballero in some of the club’s most important games towards the end of the season.

Mendy is a decent choice in goal

Chelsea have since been linked to a host of goalkeepers including Jan Oblak, Andre Onana, Dean Henderson, Nick Pope and Mike Maignan. However, given the lavish nature of our summer spending, the prospect of going big on a keeper seems remote.

Keeping in line with our financial constraints, bringing in a proven but low-profile keeper appears to be a smart idea.

It is the performance rather than the name that matters. After all, as Kepa has shown, there is only so far that hype can get you.
